Fastest is not best. You want weight loss that is sustainable. shoot to lose 1-3 pounds per week and don t get discouraged if you go a week or two without progress. You ll get there.A lot of the answers you will see here will tell you to take some type of supplement. You don t need diet pills. It s not the lack of pills that got you heavy, that is not the fix you need. It was (probably) improper diet and lifestyle that got you here; that is the fix you need. You will find a lot of conflicting opinions about how you should eat, but no one has studied this longer, nor more successfully, than the Asians. If we eat like the Asians, we will look like the Asians (thin). When they eat like us, they look like us (not thin). This does not mean that you have to eat Chinese food all the time. In fact, the different cultures of Asia eat very different foods, but they all adhere to the same principles. They eat a lot of cooked vegetables, simple grains (more rice less bread and pasta), a wide variety of foods, some fruit, a little meat, no dairy, no artificial, processed, or diet foods.Cooked vegetables are better than raw. Whatever you put in your body that is cold or raw, you have to heat and cook. This does not burn extra calories, but it does slow your metabolism and rob you of energy. But balance and moderation are the keys, so it s OK to have some raw foods sometimes. The more processed a food is, the more difficult it is to un-process. This is why rice is better than breads and pastas, which are better than cookies and crackers and other prepared, snack foods.Your number one beverage should be water (room or body temperature), number two should be green tea (stimulates the metabolism, decreases appetite, reduces cholesterol, and much more). All other beverages should be occasional. Soda and even juice should be kept to a minimum. Coffee is fine now and then but should not be an everyday beverage.Don t worry about calories. The average person in China eats 25-40% more calories on a daily basis than their American counterpart. Even the sedentary office workers have more calories and less obesity than we do. It s not the number of calories, its the type of calories. Simple foods are easy to digest, especially when they are (slightly) cooked.Get some exercise every day, but make sure to vary the exercises you do. You have over 600 muscles and they all want attention. 2 minutes is better than none. Tai Chi is the best exercise; yoga, swimming, and walking are great; all other exercises should be in a wider rotation. There are several good books that can help you follow this healthy way of living. The Asian Diet: simple secrets for eating right, losing weight, and being well by Bussell does a great job of explaining this diet and its rationale. The Asian Diet: get slim and stay slim the Asian way by Tran has recipes that adhere to the principles. The China Study by Campbell has the science behind the recommendations. In Defense of Food by Pollan explains how we have been systematically brainwashed in order to sell us products.Balance and moderation are the keys to health. Most diets in American are neither balanced nor moderate. It s not all about fat, calories, carbs, protein, sugar, or any other component of food. It s about the whole food and how it affects us. The Chinese have experimented and observed long enough to learn how these foods affect us. Since we have started looking to science to tell us how to eat, we have had more obesity and diet-related disease than ever before. Too often, it is the food companies paying the scientists to run the studies that conclude that we need to buy that particular manufacturers product. We cannot trust science, doctors, or even the government. We need to trust culture, and to look at what actually works.
