What is healthy weight loss for a person that is 40 lbs overweight? -

I ve been running between 25-35 miles per week, but am still only losing less than a pound per week on average.

Successful weight loss is dependent upon activity as well as proper nutrition. You need to look at what you are eating, and make sure you are eating enough. At least 2000 calories a day for you of proper real food, mainly low GI carbs, plenty of fruit and vegetables and adequate protein. If you drink beer or sodas, you have to stop! To lose a pound a week you need to create a daily deficit of 500 calories. One to two pounds per week should be your aim. I would suggest that you start to walk and not run so much, because you may be in the wrong heart rate training zone. 220 less your age is your predicted maximum heart rate. Calculate 65 to 75% of your max heart rate and stay in that zone for 40 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week. You just might be trying too hard, and actually overdoing it by burning the wrong fuel! You need to have a few total rest days. Medications can also affect weight loss. Relax a bit, it took time for those 40 lbs to accumulate and they re not all going to dissolve in a few months. Go visit a fitness centre if you can, they should be able to help you. They will have equipment to measure your heart rate zones.

Well if you are 40 pounds overweight then you want to lose the 40 pounds and then maintain it. You need to count calories (go to a calorie counter to see how many you should be eating), carbs, and fat. They say to do 3 30 minute cardio workouts a week and 4 30 minute strenght workouts a week. Try going to www.sparkpeople.com to help you keep track of you workouts, eating and drinking habits. I have been on their program for 2 months and lost 20 pounds. You can customize it to your needs and wants

Wow, you are running alot. I wish I could run that much or run period. Anyway, your body might be holding on to fat because you run alot and you are not eating enough. You might need something like 2500 calories to lose weight since you exercise pretty intensely.

Aim for 1-2 pounds per week. Keep a food diary. Make an appt with a Registered Dietitian if possible. Are you on any medications that may interfere with your weight? Are you eating healthy?
